Day 1: Arrival in Mas del Joncar, Sant Pere Pescador, starting point of the route. Host Miquel will prepare a great diner, cooked with local products, and you will receive all the travel documentation for the route. We will label your bags which we will transport for you during the week so you can travel light.
Day 2: Sant Pere pescador – Castelló d’Empúries (15 km)
The first stage starts in Mas del Joncar in the reserva de mig de dos rius, part of the naturepark Aiguamolls de l'Empordà in the municipality of Sant Pere Pescador. We walk along the river Fluvià towards the beach. After a short stretch of beach along the campsite Nautic Almatà we enter the central part of the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà. We will have plenty of time to visit the various bird watching observatories and the visitor centre El Cortalet. After that we will head for the river Muga and follow the camí natural de la Muga along the northern bank of the river to Castelló d’Empúries, the capital of the Empordà in medieval times. We will have our evening meal and stay the night in hotel Casa Clara Day 3: Roses – Cadaqués (19 km)
The second stage starts, after a short transfer in minibus, in the port of Roses, town that was founded by the ancient Greeks and was a military strongpoint in medieval times. From Roses we will follow the camí de ronda (coastal trail) along the southern coast of the Cap de Creus peninsula to Cadaqués, an old fishing village in a sheltered bay, visited by many famous artists and poets through the 20th century. Along the way we will pass numerous little bays, coves and beaches, only accessible by foot. If the temperature allows we catake a swim. We stay the night in hotel Rocamar in Cadaqués and have our evening meal in one of the many restaurants in this enchanting village.
Day 4: Cadaqués – Cap de Creus (16 km)
The third stage we walk from Cadaqués to the lighthouse at Cap de Creus, the easternmost point of mainland Spain. Today we can marvel at the roughness and beauty of this rocky outcrop that gives name to the Cap de Creus nature reserve. Next to the lighthouse we find a restaurant where we can have a good Catalan lunch of fresh fish or Indian curry. We return to Cadaqués the same way we came and spend another night in hotel Rocamar. For those who prefer a day’s rest, there is the option to visit the town, lie on the beach or visit the Dalí house/museum in nearby Portlligat.
Day 5: Cadaqués – Port de la Selva (13 or 14 km)
For stage 4 we leave the coast behind us and cross the northern half of the Cap de Creus peninsula from Cadaqués to Port de la Selva, a fishing village with a natural port on the northern end of the peninsula. The route leads over the top of Puig dels Bufadors from which we have some of the best views of the Cap de Creus nature reserve and the plain of the Alt Empordà. For those who don’t want to climb to the top there is an alternative route along the camí vell (old road) to Port de la Selva. When we reach Port de la Selva we can enjoy its bay and the fantastic views of the Serra de Rodes mountain range across the water. We have our evening meal and spend the night in hotel Porto Cristo.
Day 6: Port de la Selva – Sant Pere de Rodes (10 or 13 km)
Stage 5 is possibly the most spectacular stage of the week. We leave Port de la Selva and head for the medieval village of La Selva de Mar, from where we start the ascent of Sant Salvador Saverdera the highest peak in the Serra de Rodes mountain range. We will follow a tricky path along the ridge of the mountain to the ruins of the 9th century castle of Sant Salvador de Verdera at the top. Just underneath the castle we find the mighty monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes, built between the 9th and 12th century A.D., open to visitors all year round (closed on Mondays). After a visit to the monastery we descend to La Selva de Mar and Port de la Selva where we spend the night in hotel Porto Cristo. ATTENTION: the path along the ridge is not suited for people with vertigo or people who are inexperienced or insecure on mountain trails. If the tramuntana (strong northern wind) blows, the path becomes even more dangerous because walkers are very exposed to the elements. For those who choose not to walk the ridge there is an easier ascend directly from La Selva de Mar to the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes
Day 7: Port de la Selva – Portbou (19 km)
The sixth stage takes us on the camí de ronda, along the northern coast of the Cap de Creus peninsula, from Port de la Selva to Llançà. From Llançà we follow the coast further north to Colera and Portbou. Here we find ourselves in the Serra de l’Albera mountain range, where the Pyrenees drop steep into the Mediterranean at the French – Spanish border, where the mountains form a natural barrier between the two countries. Portbou is a relatively new town with a big rail way station. We have our evening meal in hotel La Masia in Portbou and spend the night here.
